My Juneteenth celebration yesterday. Beauty, bellies, booties, & black women. My liberation came in the form of radical honesty. I sat in that pool yesterday and shed real tears and let it wash over me.
Often times as women and/or mothers, we try to keep it all together. We’ve been conditioned to. The concept of being a “strong black woman” can be very destructive and isolating. Not to mention, it takes mental energy and resources that can be better spent. I’m pledging to let it all go, practice compassion, and ask for the help that I need.
Open. Release. Shed. Love. Grow. Thankful for my tribe.
Celebrating self love. If you’re reading this, know that you are worthy and you are loved. You are beautiful and joy is your birthright.
Hey everyone! How are things? …it’s been a lot, right? I’ve been mostly focused on being a mom and a graduate student right now. And trust me, that is plenty. Overflow. When I first found out that my graduate program was transitioning to online learning, I really thought I was gonna show up to classes (on Zoom) in my “house clothes.” Nah playa. The devil is a lie. See I like to dress. I like to style clothes. AKA my closet is my playground.
So as long as I’m home based, I’m gonna get up and get dressed for the day and so will my kids. We gon be comfy but cute. Pajamas all day was fun for a little while but nah. We off that.
Then we can feel good and look good when we go on walks around the neighborhood. How are you and your family settling in at home?
Earlier this month, I got a facial and massage at IWI Fresh. I have had a few different spa experiences in Atlanta, but this is the first time that I had been to a natural spa to this degree. They advertise themselves as farm to skin, meaning that they grow the products and create the products that they use. I’m talking about oils, face sprays, scrubs….all smelled super delicious as well. My services were really great. The music throughout the place was a whole vibe, it’s decorated cute, and it was filled with black people. Plus there is a facial/ massage combo on Groupon. Need I say more?
I know that most people are at home right now. Not only is social distancing in full effect but you damn sure aren’t about to get a massage. BUT when the time does come, check out IWI Fresh. I was really happy with my time there.
I hope yal are doing well. Stay safe & protect your energy.
This what I feel like sometimes during meditation. Like, where the fuck am I? And also, yes.
I’ve been holding down a consistent meditation practice lately and I just think it’s so necessary and cool. For me, meditation is a form of self-love. When I’m done, my body feels more relaxed and my mind is way more quiet. I feel super present.
So right now my intention is to meditate 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the evening. I don’t always reach that goal but I’m building consistency still. If you want to start meditating and that seems like too long for you, 5 minutes is also great. Any minutes is great if you ask me. I think the important part is about being intentional about the actual practice of meditation: focusing on your breath, letting go of your thoughts, and then noticing when you inevitably let your mind wander and bringing your awareness back to your breath. It’s a lovely little dance.
For my science folks, research shows the benefits of meditation include lowering blood pressure, anxiety, and depression and also helping people cope with chronic pain. Not to mention you can see colors with your eyes closed. So there’s that too. Need I say more?
What is your meditation practice? Are you the silent meditation type, or do you prefer a little music or a guided meditation? And if you’ve never tried meditation before, I’m just wondering why not. 🙂
